Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Officer

We are looking for an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Officer to join our Phone Assembly group, as we scale up and drive digital and financial inclusion across our markets.
Job Purpose
As an Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Officer, you will be a vital part of the Phone Line Assembly, Warehouse, and Logistics teams, tasked with ensuring adherence to EHS regulations and fostering a safe and healthy workplace.
Key Job Functions
▪ Compliance Management: Implement and maintain EHS policies, programs, and procedures to ensure compliance with local regulations, as well as industry standards in the factory and warehouse.
▪ Risk Assessment: Identify potential environmental, health, and safety hazards within the site and conduct risk assessments to evaluate and mitigate risks.
▪ Incident Management: Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and implement corrective and preventive measures to prevent recurrence.
▪ Training and Education: Provide EHS training and education to employees and management to increase awareness and understanding of EHS policies and procedures.
▪ Environmental Management: Oversee environmental initiatives, such as waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainability efforts, to minimize the warehouse's environmental impact.
▪ Take the necessary measures to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene on the site, preventing and taking care of any possible illness situation affecting employees.
▪ Safety Programs: Develop and maintain safety programs, including emergency response plans, evacuation procedures, and safety drills in the warehouse.
▪ Monitoring and Reporting: Conduct regular EHS audits and inspections to ensure compliance and prepare reports for management.
▪ Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of EHS incidents, training sessions, inspections, and other relevant data.
▪ Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Admin, procurement, and human resources, to integrate EHS practices into daily operations.
▪ Continuous Improvement: Continuously monitor EHS performance on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis and analyze areas of improvement.
▪ Regulatory Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for government agencies, representing the factory and warehouse during EHS inspections and audits.
▪ Verify with local authorities the conformity with the regulations, the mandatory licenses, and reports.
▪ Emergency Response: Develop and lead emergency response procedures, ensuring that employees are prepared to respond effectively to emergencies as well as coordinate medical evacuation.
▪ Lead and Provide First-aid assistance in case of accidents at the workplace.
▪ Contractor Management: Oversee EHS requirements for contractors and vendors working on-site to ensure their compliance with safety regulations.
▪ Continuous Learning: Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and changes in regulations to ensure the organization’s EHS programs remain current and effective.
▪ Enforcing Safety Protocols: Distribute and/or verify the use of the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and their condition.
▪ Ensuring walkway safety and adherence to correct pathways for employees and machinery, hence preventing accidents and injuries.
This is an on-site role reporting to the Head of Manufacturing.
Expertise
▪ Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Degree in Environmental Health and Safety
▪ Nebosh Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
▪ Certificate in Safety Management
▪ OHS-specific training, including Health & Safety Techniques, First Aid, and Firefighting
▪ At least 2 years of industrial experience
▪ Experience responding to safety incidents as a first responder
▪ Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Management System – ISO 45001
▪ Appropriate experience in applying legislation and policies related to Occupational Health and Safety, Healthcare Waste Management, and Environmental Health
▪ Ability to build teams and collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds
▪ Good communication skills
▪ Strong planning and organizational abilities
▪ Creative problem-solving skills, especially in critical projects and onsite crises
