Senior Manager, Retail and Logistics | M-KOPA Uganda
Role Summary:
You've built operational excellence. You've optimized systems. You've managed complexity. But have you ever built operations that directly unlock economic opportunity for millions?
Here's what M-KOPA is building
We've grown from 5 million to 7 million customers in the past year, unlocking over $2 billion in credit for people across Africa. 86% of our customers report improved quality of life. 70% use our products for income generation. And for 55% of them, we're their first-ever access to smartphones, solar systems, or financing.
Behind those numbers is a massive operational machine: 2,300+ employees, 35,000 agents, 2 million smartphones assembled in Kenya, and 4,000+ e-motorbikes saving riders $5.62 every single day. We've contributed $45 million in taxes and we're building the infrastructure for Africa's digital economy.
Now we're scaling to 10 million customers. And that's where you come in.
Why this timing matters
You might have seen us advertising multiple roles lately. That's deliberate. We're not filling gaps—we're building the operational infrastructure for our next growth phase. The leap from 7 million to 10 million customers requires fundamentally different systems, processes, and leadership than got us here.
Uganda is a critical growth market for us, and we need someone who can build retail and logistics operations that don't just support growth—they enable it.
What makes this role different
Most retail and logistics roles are about maintaining what exists. This one is about building what's next.
Your typical retail operations role: optimizing existing stores, managing steady-state inventory, incremental improvements.
This role: designing the retail network that enables financial inclusion at scale, building logistics systems for markets where traditional infrastructure doesn't exist, creating customer service operations that turn first-time smartphone users into economically empowered entrepreneurs.
You won't just manage warehouses and service centers. You'll architect the physical and operational backbone that enables 86% customer satisfaction in some of Africa's most challenging operating environments.
Your impact
You'll own end-to-end retail and logistics operations across Uganda, managing everything from warehouse operations to service center excellence to phone repair turnaround. Here's what that actually looks like:
You're overseeing inventory management for thousands of devices across multiple retail outlets while ensuring stock visibility is accurate enough to support daily sales allocations. You're coordinating with OEM and third-party repair partners globally to reduce phone servicing turnaround times, directly impacting customer experience for people who depend on these devices for their livelihoods. You're analyzing Fresh Desk ticket backlogs and implementing training programs that help shop attendants troubleshoot device issues faster and more accurately, reducing no-fault-found returns.
You're also building the systems for what comes next: evaluating which retail outlets should expand, where new locations should open, how to scale logistics operations to support geographic growth, how to optimize the retail network as integrated sales and customer support hubs.
You'll manage budgets, coordinate third-party partnerships, ensure branding execution, conduct field audits, and continuously improve processes that directly enable customer satisfaction and revenue growth.
What you'll need to succeed
Extensive progressive experience in operational management with demonstrable success building and scaling retail, logistics, or service operations in complex, multi-location environments. You've managed the full spectrum: inventory systems, reverse logistics, service center operations, and third-party partnerships.
Proven leadership experience managing both field-based operational teams and desk-based resources, with a track record of driving coordination, prioritization, and effectiveness across distributed retail functions. You know how to balance strategic planning with hands-on execution.
Strong analytical foundation with proficiency in data visualization systems (Looker or similar), combined with demonstrated ability to use data for cost-effective decision-making, ROI analysis, KPI monitoring, and trend interpretation that drives operational improvements.
The reality check
This role is demanding. You'll be building systems while running operations. You'll manage budgets, people, partners, and processes simultaneously. You'll need to think strategically about scaling to 10 million customers while solving today's operational challenges. You'll coordinate across functions—working closely with sales, marketing, device teams, and global OEM partners.
And you're probably ready for exactly this. If you've been optimizing someone else's operations and thinking "I could build this better from the ground up," this is your opportunity.
What success looks like
In six months, you've reduced phone servicing turnaround times, improved stock visibility accuracy, and implemented training programs that measurably improve diagnostic accuracy. In a year, you've scaled retail operations to support new geographic expansion while maintaining operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. In two years, you've built the operational infrastructure that enables Uganda to double its customer base.
And throughout, you're directly enabling financial inclusion for people who've never had access before. The shop attendant you train helps a customer troubleshoot their first smartphone. The logistics system you optimize ensures a delivery rider gets their e-motorbike faster, earning income sooner. The service center you improve helps someone stay connected to their business.
Ready to build operations that enable economic transformation?
If you're reading this and thinking "I've been waiting for operational work that actually matters at scale," that's probably the signal you should explore this. Let's talk about building retail and logistics operations that don't just move products—they unlock opportunity.
